Waterford
Ends Season with a heartbreaking loss to the Long Island
Mariners 4-2.
In the rubber match for
a third consecutive trip to the NABF Collegiate World series
Waterford lost a tough match up with the Mariners. After
losing the first game 3-1 on Thursday the Fordians came back
to lay a 6-1 pasting on the Long Island Champs. Waterford took
a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st and save for a diving
catch by the Mariners on a Al Williams
bases loaded hot liner it would have been much more.
That held up until the Mariners scored a un earned run in the
bottom of the 3rd. Fordian starter Mark
Sidoti did his job in giving up just 2 hits in his 3
innings of work. Waterford continued to get on base leaving 6
men on base in the next 2 innings while the score remained
knotted. Back to Back homers to lead off the 6th inning by the
Mariners gave them a cushion off Waterford reliever Leo
Corvino and brought in Adam
Lasek , All Time Waterford big game pitcher. Lasek did
a great job giving up 1 run over the next 3 innings of work
but the big story was the Fordians left on base and the
spectacular defense of the Mariners. The Fordians loaded the
bases in the 7th and 8th innings only to have the Mariners
make sensational catches at, near or diving into the wall (in Bill
Kelts' case) to stave off the
Fordians. Even in the 9th inning Bob
Murphy led off with a single and a later walk to big Paul
Terry put the tying run at the plate with the 2-3-4
hitters up to bat, only to have the Mariners 2nd baseman end
the game with yet another web gem diving catch..
A great job for
the Mariners who moved on their first World Series, they finally
beat Waterford after losing the finals for the past 2 seasons
.
Good
luck from the Fordians to a great bunch of guys.
For the Fordians it was
the end of a great season. finishing 39-9-2 with a seven game
no win slump right in the middle).
Waterford
won The Eastern New York Collegiate East Division 11-1 and
then the League 24-2 for the 4th straight year .
WITH
THE ADDITION OF A LIGHTED KELTS STADIUM FOR NEXT SEASON and
the
majority of the Fordians back there should be more excitement
than ever and expectations are running high to field
another top notch team. Expectations run high for both a
Unlimited and Collegian title in 2008.
